On the homology of the scales in Gunnera (Gunneraceae)

چکیده
In the genus Gunnera , the species of subgenus Panke are unique in having large, triangular scales between the leaves on the rhizomes. The morphological significance of these scales has been extensively debated in the past. They have been interpreted as stipules, ligules, or cataphylls, with attempts made to identify homologous structures in representatives of the other subgenera. In the stoloniferous subgenus Misandra, the shoot apex is covered by a hoodlike structure, usually termed ochrea, generally considered homologous to the scales in Panke . Efforts to find similar structures in the remaining subgenera were unsuccessful. Due to the lack of a phylogenetic hypothesis, the homology of the scales has remained unresolved. In this study, the shoot apices of species from all subgenera were examined by light and scanning electron microscopy and the results interpreted in a phylogenetic context. The tip of the stolons in subgenera Pseudogunnera and Milligania carries two opposite cataphylls at the base of the new shoot. These are homologous to the ochrea in Misandra which is in turn homologous to the scales in Panke ; the latter are thus neither stipules nor ligules but cataphylls. The stems of subgenera Ostenigunnera and Gunnera have no similar structures. © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2003, 142 , 301 308.

Lactogenic activity of rats stimulated by Gunnera perpensa L. (Gunneraceae) from South Africa.
Gunnera perpensa L. (Gunneraceae) is a medicinal plant used by Zulu traditional healers to stimulate milk production. The effect of an aqueous extract of the rhizome of the plant on milk production in rats was investigated. Female lactating rats that received oral doses of the extract of G.perpensa significantly (p<0.05) produced more milk than controls. The plant extract did not however, signi...

G UNNERA PERPENSA L., FAMILY GUNNERAceae, is among the most frequently cited of about 90 species used by South African traditional healers in pregnancy-related medicines. Seven bioactive compounds were isolated from Gunnera perpensa roots, with five of these being novel to the species at the time of identification. These are 3,3’,4’-tri-Omethyl ellagic acid lactone, ellagic acid lactone, 1,1’-b...

Natural interspecific hybridization between Gunnera bracteata and G. peltata (Gunneraceae) in the Juan Fernandez Islands, Chile, is analyzed morphologically and chemically. Parental types from isolated populations were compared with parents and intermediates occurring together in Quebrada Villagra on Masatierra. Two transects were made in that area, one in a relatively undisturbed site, and ano...
متن کاملNitrogen deprivation stimulates symbiotic gland development in Gunnera manicata.
Gunnera is the only genus of angiosperms known to host cyanobacteria and the only group of land plants that hosts cyanobacteria intracellularly. Motile filaments of cyanobacteria, known as hormogonia, colonize Gunnera plants through cells in the plant's specialized stem glands. It is commonly held that Gunnera plants always possess functional glands for symbiosis. We found, however, that stem g...
متن کاملOn the cyclic Homology of multiplier Hopf algebras
In this paper, we will study the theory of cyclic homology for regular multiplier Hopf algebras. We associate a cyclic module to a triple $(mathcal{R},mathcal{H},mathcal{X})$ consisting of a regular multiplier Hopf algebra $mathcal{H}$, a left $mathcal{H}$-comodule algebra $mathcal{R}$, and a unital left $mathcal{H}$-module $mathcal{X}$ which is also a unital algebra. First, we construct a para...
